The band’s smaller size allows for more flexibility depending on an event’s needs and a more intimate sound. While the Sidecar Special is still geared towards dancers and primarily focuses on jazz standards of the 30s and 40s, it also explores the sounds of a wider era, drawing inspiration from traditional jazz of the late 20s and early 30s, as well as the later 40s and even early 50s. Relying heavily on vocal numbers, the group’s repertoire features the work of many theatrical composers such as Rodgers and Hart, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Lerner and Lowe, and more. Well. Not exactly. Bandleader and vocalist Gretchen Midgley has been singing since she could talk. She got involved as an organizer for groups such as the DC Lindy Exchange and the Jam Cellar, and has taught for the CUA Swing Dance Club, the Jam Cellar, Capital City Swing, New Columbia Swing, and more. It wasn’t long before Gretchen realized that her love for dancing and professional background as a vocalist could be united. She also serves as a vocalist in the 229th Army Band and performs in musicals when she has the time.
