<image:title>Sidecar Special - Gretchen and the Sidecar Special</image:title>
<image:caption>Designed to meet the needs of events looking for smaller ensembles, Gretchen and the Sidecar Special is a four-piece small combo featuring piano or guitar, bass, drums, and vocals. The band’s smaller size allows for more flexibility depending on an event’s needs and a more intimate sound. While the Sidecar Special is still geared towards dancers and primarily focuses on jazz standards of the 30s and 40s, it also explores the sounds of a wider era, drawing inspiration from traditional jazz of the late 20s and early 30s, as well as the later 40s and even early 50s. Relying heavily on vocal numbers, the group’s repertoire features the work of many theatrical composers such as Rodgers and Hart, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Lerner and Lowe, and more. Depending on your event’s needs, the Sidecar Special can also be expanded to a quintet or pared down to a trio. The Sidecar Special has been featured at events such as Gottaswing’s Friday Nights at the Hilton, Lindy Central PA’s Rhythm Lounge, and Philly Frish Fry.</image:caption>

<image:title>About Gretchen - It all began with swing dancing.</image:title>
<image:caption>Well. Not exactly. Bandleader and vocalist Gretchen Midgley has been singing since she could talk. A lifelong love of performing took Gretchen from her home in Los Angeles to The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC where she obtained her Bachelor of Music in Musical Theatre and later her Master of Arts in Theatre Education.</image:caption>

<image:title>About Gretchen - While obtaining her undergraduate degree, Gretchen discovered the swing dance club and over time became active in the local DC swing dance community. She got involved as an organizer for groups such as the DC Lindy Exchange and the Jam Cellar, and has taught for the CUA Swing Dance Club, the Jam Cellar, Capital City Swing, New Columbia Swing, and more. It wasn’t long before Gretchen realized that her love for dancing and professional background as a vocalist could be united. After attending Welbourne Jazz Camp and learning more about early jazz, Gretchen decided to start a band of her own and the Sidecar Six was born.</image:title>

<image:title>About Gretchen - Gretchen spent over a decade as an organizer and teacher in the swing dance community. However, since getting on the bandstand she realized she actually prefers playing to dancing itself! When not bandleading, Gretchen also sings with bands like the the Scott Silbert Big Band. She also serves as a vocalist in the 229th Army Band and performs in musicals when she has the time. When she’s not on the stage or dance floor, Gretchen teaches high school theatre, writes musicals, pets cats, and enjoys eating ranch dressing.</image:title>
